Biography

Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe (born February 6, 1993), is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, actress and former model. Her name means « God Is With Us » in her father’s native language, Shona, from Zimbabwe. Raised in Los Angeles, California, she began her entertainment career at the age of 3 when she began modeling and acting.

Tinashe spent four years from age 14-18 as a member of the girl group The Stunners, founded by Vitamin C. Six months later, the group signed with Columbia Records and released a single titled « Bubblegum » to iTunes along with the official video. The single and video were later removed from iTunes. In December 2008 Sanders left the group to pursue her acting career and was substituted by Lauren Hudson. In 2009, the group left Columbia Records and signed a production deal with Lionsgate Entertainment, who also produced a scripted television show pilot based on the group, which was ordered by MTV. In October of that year, the girls released a 5-song EP influenced by Madonna, Gwen Stefani and Rihanna and shot a music video for their promo single « We Got It » which was released on February 22, 2010.
The group performed the song on The Today Show as well as The Wendy Williams Show.  After meeting with various labels interested in the group, they signed to Universal Republic Records in 2010 and released their first single « Dancin’ Around the Truth » which featured the New Boyz to iTunes as well as Top 40 radio stations. The music video premiered June 2, just before the group was announced as an opening act on Justin Bieber’s My World Tour. They finished their run after twenty dates on the tour and returned to LA to record new songs with producers and writers such as Toby Gad, The Cataracs, Dave Broome, Livvi Franc, Sheppard Soloman, Jimmy Harry and Tony Kanal of No Doubt fame. They shot a fourth music video in the desert of California in November for their new song « Spin The Bottle » which premiered on December 31, 2010. A full album along with an official second single titled « Heart Stops Beating », written by Tinashe and Allie and produced by Orange Factory Music was planned, but cancelled when the group split in 2011.

After the Stunners officially disbanded, Tinashe began pursuing a solo career. On May 3, 2011, Tinashe gave her first televised solo performance in front of 57,000 people during the Dodgers VS. Cubs baseball game singing the National Anthem, « God Bless America ».  She released her first solo music video, a cover of Lil Wayne’s single « How to Love ». The song was later released as a free digital download via Tinashe’s official website. Following the video’s release Tinashe confirmed she had officially been released from her recording contract with Universal Republic. Announced on August 5, 2011, Tinashe was featured on the dance single « Artificial People » by the music production company OFM. On November 25, 2011 Tinashe released the music video for « Can’t Say No », her first original solo song. The track samples Britney Spears’s song « Blur » from her sixth studio album Circus.

February 2012 saw the release of In Case We Die, Tinashe’s debut solo mixtape which she recorded herself in her home-studio. The mixtape released four singles, the first being promotional song « Chainless » .The first official single from the mixtape « My High » was released for streaming on her official website. The second official single released from In Case We Die was announced as « This Feeling ». The mixtape was received positively by the blogosphere.
On July 13, 2012 Tinashe announced she had signed with RCA Records. Following Tinashe signing to RCA she released her second mixtape Reverie on September 6, 2012 through her official website. Upon its release, reviews for Reverie were generally positive.

On November 26, 2013 Tinashe released her third Mixtape « Black Water » that consisted of thirteen tracks produced by Dev Hynes, Boi-1da, Ryan Hemsworth and Tinashe herself. The project also includes a feature from rapper Travis Scott on the single « Vulnerable » released off the mixtape

Tinashe worked on her debut studio album in 2014. It was set to be released October 7, 2014 and Tinashe has been recorded in Los Angeles, London, Atlanta, New York, and Toronto. Tinashe has been working with several producers including Clams Casino, Ryan Hemsworth, Stuart Matthewman, Mike Will Made It, DJ Mustard, T-Minus, Boi-1da, Fisticuffs, Best Kept Secret, Ritz Reynolds and many more.
On January 13, 2014, Tinashe released « 2 On », a song featuring American rapper Schoolboy Q and produced by DJ Mustard, as the first single from her debut album. The song entered the US Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 89 and has since peaked at number 24. On June 29, 2014, Tinashe made her national television debut, performing her hit single « 2 On » at the BET Awards pre-show and also announced that her anticipated debut album Aquarius, would be officially released on October 7, 2014. She spoke about the theme of the album and said « It combines the essence of all my previous work. I’ve stayed true to who I am. Obviously, there’s some progression as I’ve grown as an artist, and I’m influenced by new things and what not. I think my fans will be really happy with it. I think it really embodies who I am and where I am creatively right now.” The second single « Pretend » featuring Harlem rapper ASAP Rocky was released on August 22 and an accompanying music video will be released soon.
