Biography
For Afrobeat and Afropop lovers, Davido is undoubtedly one of the most important artists, at least since this decade. Indeed, in a few years, he has made a name for himself in Nigeria, on the African continent and even beyond. It must be admitted that the artist has a very unique background.
David Adedeji Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido was born on November 21, 1992 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the son of Nigerian billionaire Adedeji and Vero Adeleke, who has already passed away. Davido first studied at the British International School in Lagos before studying at the University of Oakwood in Alabama. But Davido is increasingly losing interest in studies to focus on his passion: music.
He therefore decided to leave Oakwood and move to London. There, he devotes his time to improving his vocal technique. In 2011, he returns to Nigeria. At his father’s request, he decided to join Babcock University and temporarily set aside his musical career. Davido then joined the music department created on his father’s initiative and financed by him. Davido graduated with a degree in music. Davido admitted that his father was decisive in the beginning of his career although the fact that he was able to win over fans is undoubtedly his own.
His first album « Omo Baba Olowo » recorded between 2011 and 2012 is a mix of Afrobeat, Afropop and Hip-Hop and has allowed Davido to collaborate with renowned artists such as Naeto C, Ice Prince, B-Red and 2 Face Idibia. The album received mixed reviews, but still received the Best R&B/Pop Album award. Davido is also gaining a certain reputation among the public.
Davido then made singles that definitively placed him among the most adored artists in the field of Afrobeat today. These include the famous « Gobe », « One of a Kind », « Skelewu », or « Aye ». These titles have allowed him to collaborate with other famous artists such as Meek Mill. On June 24, 2018, Davido is the first African based artist to receive an award at the BET Awards. At 26, Davido’s career is booming. Thus, the May edition of Forbes African Magazine has established a top 10 of the most profitable African artists and of course, Davido is included.
And let’s not forget that with his brother Adewale Adeleke, Davido is also the co-founder of the label « HKN Music ». He has produced songs by artists such as Naeto C, Skales, Tiwa Savage and Kid Sauce.
