Enfant terrible of the American rap, Kodak Black is surely one of the US rappers with the most sulphurous history of the moment.
Bill K. Kapri was born on June 11, 1997 in Pompano Beach, Florida.
His real name is Dieuson Octave, he took the nickname « Black » at the age of six. It was when he joined Instagram, that he chose the nickname « Kodak Black » because « it’s a nod to photos and all that. » This name will later become his stage name.
The child of Haitian immigrants, Kodak grew up in Golden Acres, a neighborhood in Pompano Beach. Since his childhood, Kodak has been involved in a series of offenses
A music fan, he had been rapping since elementary school. He went to trap houses after school to record his first sounds. In an interview, the artist revealed that he had two choices regarding his education. « It was to sell drugs with a gun on his hip or to rap. »
The career of Kodak Black is marked and punctuated by periods of mainstream success alternated with numerous legal disputes as well as public controversies.
In December 2013, J-Black, now Kodak Black, released his first mixtape entitled Project Baby. Then the following year, released his second mixtape Heart of the Projects.
In 2014, Kodak Black released the single No Flockin; which was a big hit in his native Florida before going on to become a wide viral success.
In October 2015, the single Skrt was released on YouTube via the WorldStarHipHop channel and would become his first major hit. Drake posted a video on Instagram where he recorded himself dancing to Skrt, which would give his career a real boost. That same month, Kodak Black signed to Atlantic Records8. His third mixtape Institution was released in December 2015.
In February 2016, Kodak is invited by French Montana on the single Lockjaw from his twentieth mixtape Wave Gods, the video is released on June 9 of that year and the single is certified gold.
Kodak Black is then nominated in the XXL Freshman Class 2016.
On March 31, 2017, his first studio album entitled Painting Pictures was released. The album peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 selling 71,000 copies in its first week of release and was certified platinum two years later in November 2019.
On August 18, 2017, Kodak Black released the mixtape Project Baby 2, driven by the single Roll in Peace in collaboration with rapper XXXTentacion. The project directly reaches #2 on the Billboard 200 with 50,000 copies sold in its first week of release. A reissue entitled Project Baby 2: All Grown Up was released two months later and included the single Codeine Dreaming in collaboration with Lil Wayne. The mixtape was certified platinum in December 2018.
In January 2018, Kodak was booked into the Broward County Jail on multiple charges. On May 2, 2018, he legally changes his name to Bill K. Kapri. A month later, he earns his GED (the equivalent of a high school diploma) which he completes in jail. On August 18, he finally gets out of prison and announces the upcoming release of his new album.
On December 14, 2018, the Floridian released his 2nd studio album entitled Dying to Live. The album is driven by the hit single ZEZE, in collaboration with rappers Travis Scott and Offset, which peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also contains the singles If I’m Lyin,

Bill K. Kapri est né le 11 juin 1997 à Pompano Beach en Floride
De son vrai nom Dieuson Octave, il prend dès ses six ans, le surnom « Black ». C’est lorsqu’il rejoint Instagram, qu’il choisit le pseudo « Kodak Black » car « c’est un clin d’œil aux photos et tout ça. » (Kodak étant une marque américaine d’appareil photo).
