Chris de Burgh is an Irish singer-songwriter, born in Argentina, whose career spans more than five decades. His music blends pop, soft rock, cinematic storytelling and romantic ballads, with songs that have achieved international success in territories as varied as the United Kingdom, continental Europe, South America, South Africa and Australia. He is particularly associated with “The Lady in Red”, now a global classic, but his catalogue also includes narrative and rock songs such as “Don’t Pay the Ferryman”, “Spanish Train”, “A Spaceman Came Travelling” and “High on Emotion”. A prolific songwriter, he has built a lasting relationship with audiences through regular tours and concerts in which he often shares the stories behind his songs.
Born Christopher John Davison on 15 October 1948 in Venado Tuerto, Argentina, he spent part of his childhood in several countries because of his father’s diplomatic career before settling in Ireland. He adopted the stage name Chris de Burgh, taken from his mother’s maiden name. He signed his first recording contract in the 1970s and released Far Beyond These Castle Walls in 1974. According to his official biography, the single “Flying”, taken from that debut album, reached number one in Brazil for seventeen consecutive weeks. His second album, Spanish Train and Other Stories (1975), revealed his taste for narratives, characters and historical or fantastical atmospheres. From the beginning, his songwriting stood out for a storytelling approach that gives his songs the quality of short musical tales.
During the 1970s and early 1980s, he expanded his catalogue with At the End of a Perfect Day, Crusader, Eastern Wind and The Getaway. “Don’t Pay the Ferryman” helped broaden his international profile, while “High on Emotion”, released on Man on the Line in 1984, topped charts in several European countries. His albums performed particularly well in Scandinavia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and South Africa. The variety of his influences—rock, melodic pop, acoustic instrumentation and orchestral arrangements—allows him to move from energetic songs to intimate ballads without losing his distinctive songwriting voice. He also built a reputation as a live performer through a busy touring schedule and concerts that alternate guitar, piano and personal storytelling.
The commercial peak of his career arrived in 1986 with Into the Light, the album featuring “The Lady in Red”. The song reached number one in many countries, including the United Kingdom, and became one of the most recognisable romantic songs of its generation. His official biography states that it topped the charts in 47 countries and sold more than eight million copies. The track also received several ASCAP awards in the United States because of its extensive radio airplay. Into the Light remains the biggest commercial success of his career, while “The Lady in Red” continues to reappear in films, compilations and playlists that reach several generations. In 2024, its inclusion on the soundtrack of Deadpool & Wolverine brought the song to the attention of a new international audience.
Chris de Burgh continued to release albums, including Flying Colours in 1988, Power of Ten in 1992, This Way Up in 1994, The Road to Freedom in 2004, The Storyman in 2006, The Hands of Man in 2014 and A Better World in 2016. He also released several live albums, including High on Emotion: Live from Dublin, which reflects the important role concerts have played in his career. In 2021, he presented The Legend of Robin Hood, a concept project adapting a legendary figure to his love of musical storytelling. In October 2024, he marked fifty years as a recording artist with the album 50, featuring selected songs from his catalogue alongside new material. His official website estimates that he has written around 330 songs and performed nearly 4,000 concerts; these figures come from his team.
Touring has been central to his activity. He has travelled throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, South Africa, the Middle East and Australia, performing in formats ranging from large venues to more intimate guitar-and-piano shows. In 2019, his Classic Albums tour saw him perform Into the Light and Moonfleet & Other Stories in full, two albums that are especially important to him. To celebrate his fiftieth professional anniversary, he subsequently presented the 50LO tour, designed as a retrospective of the songs and stories that have shaped his career. In May 2025, he performed in Australia, including at Hamer Hall in Melbourne, the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, the State Theatre in Sydney and the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, followed by a date at Perth’s Riverside Theatre. Organisers confirmed these concerts as completed, providing recent, specific references to major venues.
Chris de Burgh has also explored musical theatre. He co-created Robin Hood – The Musical, a production staged in Germany and neighbouring countries, with music that brings his gift for melody and storytelling to the stage. The production has been mounted in cities including Fulda, Munich and Hameln, and further German-language dates have been announced. His career is therefore characterised by a rare continuity between songwriting, recording, live performance and narrative. For bookers, he is a catalogue artist whose songs are familiar to several generations and who can offer a concert combining international hits, story-driven songs and anecdotes about their creation. “The Lady in Red”, “Don’t Pay the Ferryman”, “High on Emotion” and “A Spaceman Came Travelling” are key reference points, while his experience in major venues and on international tours gives his booking profile a strong foundation.
