Lloyd Banks, is an American rapper and member of the rap group G-Unit.

Banks was born in New Carrollton, Maryland and raised in Queens, New York City; he is of mixed Puerto Rican and African American descent. His father spent most of Lloyd’s childhood in prison, leaving his mother to raise him and his two siblings. Lloyd attended August Martin High School. For his stage name, he took his great, great-grandfather’s name Banks, which was passed on by his uncles who also shared it.

He dropped out of high school and joined G-Unit in 2003 with fellow rappers 50 Cent, Tony Yayo, and Young Buck. G-Unit released two albums, Beg for Mercy in 2003 and T.O.S. (Terminate on Sight) in 2008. Banks released his first solo album The Hunger for More in 2004 with the top ten single « On Fire ». He followed with Rotten Apple in 2006 and left Interscope Records in 2009.

In 2004, Banks was awarded 2004’s Mixtape artist of the Year at the Mixtape Awards.

In 2005, « On Fire » was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Rap Solo Performance. In 2006, « Touch It [Remix] » was nominated for Hip-Hop Video of the Year, and won for Best Collaboration at the BET Awards. The award was shared by Banks and his collaborators, Busta Rhymes, Mary J. Blige, Rah Digga, Missy Elliott, Papoose, and DMX. In 2010 with the excitement surrounding the release of H.F.M. 2 (Hunger for More 2) and his return to Hip-Hop’s spotlight Hip-Hop news website HipHopDX wrote that Banks had the « Comeback of the Year ».

He reunited with G-Unit for a brand new album in 2014.

During a performance at BB King’s in New York City on August 2, 2015, Banks addressed his long-awaited Cold Corner 3 mixtape

Lloyd banks left G-Unit Records in June 2018

On June 4, 2021, he released a new project, his 4th album and has his first album in 11 years he named it  The Course of the Inevitable which sold 12,000 copies in its first week. The album received very positive reviews and Lloyd banks seemed happy with the reception as he spoke about more upcoming music at a concert he held in Sony Hall.

Since 2021, The Course of the Inevitable series has been a shining example of Lloyd Banks’ continued relevance. His longevity in Hip Hop is credited to the different variations of Banks that have bubbled over 20-plus years; starting with mixtapes and albums with G-Unit, peaking in the mainstream with his platinum-selling debut Hunger for More, and becoming a go-to download on Datpiff and LiveMixtapes as a solo artist with frequent mixtape releases. Motivated by showing and proving he’s still got it, Banks returns in 2023 with the final installment of The Course of the Inevitable trilogy.
