Born into a Jamaican-American family in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, Shawn Mims grew up influenced by the rappers just south of him, in Harlem. Despite the fact that he lost both parents by the time he was 13, Mims focused on music (his mother had given him his first set of DJ equipment shortly before she died) and school to keep himself out of trouble. Though he briefly attended community college, Mims decided if he truly wanted to make it as a rapper he needed to drop out, a move that paid off career-wise: he was soon featured on the song \u00ab\u00a0Love Em All\u00a0\u00bb by Canadian group Baby Blue Soundcrew, which was nominated for Best Video in the 2001 Much Music Awards.<\/p>\n

New York\u2019s MIMS has taken steady steps toward a legacy; the staccato seismic \u201cThis Is Why I\u2019m Hot\u201d marked a big leap, topping Billboard\u2019s Top 100 from #32 the previous week, third-biggest jump in the chart\u2019s history.
\nThe single strode well past platinum, selling 1.6 million digital copies. Additionally, figure in the 2.8 million cell phones ringing to the familiar beat. Note also the gold digital sales of follow up single \u201cLike This,\u201d likewise off 2007 debut album Music Is My Savior.<\/p>\n

Mims is also known for his songs, \u00ab\u00a0Move\u00a0\u00bb and \u00ab\u00a0Like This\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Mims released his second effort on April 7, 2009, titled \u00ab\u00a0Guilt\u00a0\u00bb. In October 2008, \u00ab\u00a0Move (If You Wanna)\u00a0\u00bb became the first official single from Mims’ new album, peaking at #63 on the Hot 100 charts. The second single was released on April 7, 2009, entitled \u00ab\u00a0Love Rollercoaster\u00a0\u00bb featuring LeToya Luckett.
\nIn February 2010 Mims appeared alongside hip-hop legends KRS-One and Redman on a song entitled \u00ab\u00a0How To Be An Emcee 2010\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n
