Born David Constantine Brooks on November 30, 1981, in Kingston, Jamaica, Mavado emerged in the mid 2000s as one of the leading figures of modern dancehall. Raised in the Cassava Piece area, he quickly developed a dark and melodic style that stood out from the dominant sound of the time. His pivotal meeting with producer Bounty Killer, who became his mentor, marked a turning point as he joined the Alliance and gained major exposure.

He broke through in 2005 with the track “Real McKoy”, followed by “Weh Dem A Do”, both of which performed strongly in reggae dancehall charts and defined his musical identity. His debut album Gangsta for Life The Symphony of David Brooks (2007) achieved international success and entered Billboard charts, confirming his status as a rising star.

Over the years, Mavado delivered a series of hits that became dancehall classics, including “Dying”, “So Special”, “Hope and Pray”, “Delilah”, and “Big League”. His signature blend of melodic vocals and street energy allowed him to reach audiences far beyond Jamaica.

His career expanded globally through major collaborations. He worked with Nicki Minaj on “Give It All To Me”, with DJ Khaled on multiple projects, and with artists such as Future, Ace Hood, French Montana, and Snoop Dogg. Signing with We the Best Music Group in 2011 further strengthened his presence in the US market.

At the same time, Mavado remained deeply rooted in dancehall culture and was involved in a notable rivalry with Vybz Kartel, which played a key role in shaping the Jamaican scene during the 2000s and 2010s, drawing international attention to the genre.

In terms of numbers, several of his tracks have accumulated tens to hundreds of millions of streams across digital platforms, while his collaborations with DJ Khaled contributed to gold and platinum certified projects in the United States.

Between 2020 and 2026, Mavado has remained active with consistent releases. Tracks such as “Enemy Line”, “Not Perfect”, “Top Shotta Nah Miss”, “Father God”, and “Life” gained traction across dancehall and afro caribbean playlists. Many of these songs quickly surpassed one million views on YouTube, with some reaching tens of millions of streams.

He also continued to appear on key dancehall riddims and collaborations, maintaining strong rotation among DJs and specialized radio. His ongoing connection with DJ Khaled remains important, alongside frequent collaborations with emerging dancehall artists, reinforcing his intergenerational influence.

On stage, he maintains a strong presence with performances at major events such as Reggae Sumfest, Best of the Best Music Fest in Miami, and Afro Nation on selected editions, as well as numerous club and venue shows across Europe (UK, France, Netherlands) and North America. His performances rely on a solid catalog of hits and authentic dancehall energy, sustaining strong demand on the international live circuit.
