Kool & The Gang est un groupe mythique fondé en 1964 à Jersey City. Le groupe se distingue par des rythmes résolument innovants, à la confluence du jazz, funk, R&B, Motown et du disco. Leur originalité connaîtra un retentissement mondial d’une longévité inégalée et sera récompensée d’un Pioneer Award, remis en 2008 par la prestigieuse Rythme & Blues Foundation.

Le groupe se fait remarquer en 1969 par le producteur Gene Redd Jr, qui deviendra par la suite leur manager. Entre 1970 et 1972, ils sortent trois albums très jazzy, mais c’est véritablement leur album Wild and Peaceful, sortit en 1973 qui marque leur premier succès commercial. L’album se classe 36 semaines consécutives au classement Billboard R&B et leur vaut un premier disque d’or.

À la fin des années 70′, le groupe prend un tournant plus disco et produit une série de hits planétaires qui traverseront les années sans se démoder, dont Ladies Night en 1979, Celebration en 1980, Get Down on It en 1981 et Fresh en 1984.

The band was spotted in 1969 by the producer Gene Redd Jr, who will later become their manager. Between 1970 and 1972, they released three very jazzy albums, but it’s their fourth album Wild and Peaceful that marked their first significant commercial success. The album charted on the U.S. R&B Billboard for 36 weeks in a row and earned them their first gold certification.

In the late 70′, the band forsee the upcoming disco revolution and adapt his groove. They released a series of planetary hits that will forge their legend : Ladies Night in 1979, Celebration in 1980, Get Down on It in 1981 and Fresh in 1984.
